1.Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Color is often regarded as most important in its visual impact. Color can elicit a wide range of psychological and emotion responses. It can range in hue, or the actual pigment such as red, blue, yellow, etc., value, or lightness and darkness, and intensity, or pure to dull. Hue is often what is referred to when taking about emotional response to color. Often color is psychologically associated with the things that culturally and naturally surround us. Blue for instance can feel spiritual due to its rarity and association with religion, freeing like the sky or the ocean, cool and calming, etc. Depending on the intensity of red it can be used to symbolize horror most likely because it is the color of blood and fire. If you are American you might associate red, white, and blue with patriotism, while other countries may have a very different context and response to that color pallet. Overall, color is unique in its ability to carry such an intense impact psychologically due to its natural and cultural uses.
2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
A theoretical aspect of color is how our exposure to color impacts our psychological responses and conception to color. It is also very intriguing to me that different people may observe certain qualities of color differently due to the amount of times they have been exposed and how their eye receptors have been trained to perceive them. Thus, everyone’s eyes/brains could be uniquely individual due to their circumstances and exposure. In addition, one color theory suggests that people have been to perceive more vibrant shades of blue for a shorter time in human history than other colors because it is less common in nature. This theory further solidifies that the introduction to different versions of color may alter the way we perceive our colorful world.
. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
In the Color video, the dialog featuring the history of pigment intrigued me most. Lapis for instance was so precious considering that it was so rare in nature and had to be imported from Afghanistan. Thus, blue was reserved by artists only for extremely important use. When a viewer saw this rare blue it was most likely a powerful experience due to its value and infrequency.
3. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
In the Feelings: Emotions and Art video, the idea of exposing human emotion and perhaps persuading thought and reason through art and use of color intrigued me. Religious works often use white, blue, and gold to depict spiritual purity while using perhaps blood red and dark mysterious black o depict evil. The Mona Lisa uses natural colors to depict a natural woman. The Oath of the Horatti, uses red cloaks because traditionally bright red was seen as a depiction of war and warning. Color and its associations has a major impact of how a work of art is seen or an idea is translated.
