Architecture: The Science of Design:
-Urban centers of cities are considered the center of human activity and building up is the resolution to maximize space.
- Foundational design is incredibly important to reinforce the structure.
- Dead weight, living weight, and wind are all factors which the contractors and designers of buildings must take into consideration.
-Cement was revolutionary to architecture.
Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture:
-Today, we are in a sort of environmental crisis and consume much more than is necessary.
-Architectural practice is global
-Sustainable architecture is considered a cultural revolution to ecologists.
-Buildings must adapt to current energy standards.
- Lighting and windows are a major consideration in large spaces
-Natural heating and cooling is also considered in design plans
-In sustainable planning, the surrounding environment must be intricately examined to create the greatest possible turnover for natural efficiency.
-Resources are an additional consideration in the materials utilized in the construction.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos provided social and scientific context and depth to uncovered areas of the text. While the text was explanatory and encompassing in practical everyday function design and construction, the videos share modern issues and progressions used in architecture today. The text provided more educational insight regarding engineering developed in the design of buildings throughout centuries, however the videos focused on more contemporary engineering practices.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
Architecture: The Science of Design was informative in regards to the engineering and environmental factors which must be considered before the aesthetic of a building is created. Additionally, the video shared contemporary information regarding “smart” or technologically advanced that I found to be ahead of its time.
Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture, was a bit more challenging for me to watch based on the language barrier causing the reading of subtitles. However, it was interesting to see the business side and practicality of sustainable building.
4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I chose to watch Architecture: The Science of Design because I expected to gain a better understanding of how architects formulate their designs and come up with plans. While I did not really get educated in that sense the video was extremely insightful in other areas.
I chose to watch Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture because I have experience in sustainability and have even worked on an organic farm specializing in permaculture. Sustainable development and architecture however deals more with the business and technical planning rather than extensive information on overall sustainable building practices which are practical in ordinary home planning and building.
