1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The first video I selected to watch was Dada and Surrealism because peculiar anti-art and otherworldly scenes have always appealed to me.
The second video I chose was Expressionism because my early style of painting was focused in expressionistic roots. I have always been interested in people and connecting to humanity.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Dada and Surrealism
Hannah Hoch uses collage in her Dada work to strip apart the world revealing the corrupt—sparing no one.
Hoch’s collages are sometimes meant to be interpreted as history lessons. – Surveys and judges the quickly changing world. –Cut With a Kitchen Knife really exemplifies this.
Dada captures the insanity of the crazed world at war. A world full of threats, death, destruction, and panic.
Grosz captured the dehumanization of the modern society and the degradation of the individual. In contrast, de Chirico's work is very similar in that is captures the stark emptiness of the present, but the culture and humanity stored in ancient sculptures and architecture.
Miro reduces pictures to basic elements of line and shape as almost a parody. Miro believes that a picture isn’t meant to entirely reflect the real world, but relate a language for itself. Miro’s paintings take on a life of their own. Miro leads one to think for their own through symbols rather than reality.
Dali “opened the windows of the mind.” Infertile lands are repetitive throughout Dali’s work. Dali was also obsessed with crutches. Dali also studies psychology and dream interpretation to reflect into his work. Dali saw his work as images of psychoanalysis. Dali also supported fascists in the Spanish Civil War.
Surrealism also captures a world that does not make sense.
Expressionism
Edvard Munch wanted to capture the living. He also had a pessimistic view on relationships. The Scream is his most well-known painting.
Expressionism captures scenes and mysteries of human emotion along with extreme human emotion. Color is often used expressively and symbolically. Munch ultimately wanted to help others explain human life for themselves.
Kirchner captures vision of that in turn becomes the viewer’s way of seeing people represented abstractly almost as symbols which express their inner beings.
Beckman’s self-portrait reveals his state of fear and anxiety through color and stroke.
Emotional states are also represented through political and societal imagery as well rather than merely personal.
In expressionism, figures wear their hearts on their sleeves, their emotions on the bodies.
3 How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The text offers a broad timeline overview of the modern world, while the films has the free range to focus into one specific aspect. The text proposed that expressionism freed color much how the film discussed its role in various works. The text blatantly calls Dadaism a protest art movement, while the film mostly discussed it as pieces of art which portrayed the irrational and senseless society or the artists’. The text and the film also both use Morro and Dali as two primary artists within the surrealist movement which distorted reality.
4 What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The film, Dada and Surrealism, ended up being a little slow and old school in its film quality, however, the narration is loaded with rich content. The film also contains a lot of historical context in its narration along with background into the lives of the artists. I enjoyed how the film narrated through its use of imagery. For instance, rather than include specific image images into a body of text, the film talked about the images as the stylistic movement.
The film, Expressionism, was also a bit drab and slow but had quality insight in content to make up for the poor-quality filming and expressiveness through voice. The narrator goes far in depth into the history and lives of the artists. Focusing on individual pieces which comprised the artistic movement allow one to depict an art period as recorders of history.
