Week 13/14 Video Reviews

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Low Down on Lowbrow Art:
Lowbrow appears to counter high-end art. However, lowbrow art can portray anything from comics, tattooing, hotrod culture, sexual and taboo art, folk art, dark humor paintings, and more.
Lowbrow captures subculture or alternative art.
The Custom Culture in an LA museum helped set the spark to feature an individual show for lowbrow art.
There is a primordial desire to tell stories and art is a medium to visually portray what is in your mind.
Can almost be correlated to punk rock of the visual art world.

An Acquiring Mind:
The film is intended to capture the processes and pieces of work acquired during the time when Philippe de Montebello served as Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for thirty-one years.
The film discusses the process of bringing in new pieces of art and how the director must approve of what the curator desires to include into an exhibit.
Artwork may be chosen based on historical importance, but still must be under the scrutiny of artistic quality.
The way one presents history can change history so it is important to display the work properly.
Historical evidence must be precisely accurate and every piece must be authenticated.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
Low Down on Lowbrow Art:
Absolutely, before even watching the film I knew I wanted to create a contemporary exhibit featuring art that isn’t often shown as being worthy in the main accredited art galleries. Lowbrow art opens the door to many different unexcepted visual arts.
An Acquiring Mind:
It was interesting to learn about and understand how large and famous galleries acquire their collections, however, my exhibit is intended to capture the antithesis. Most of the works here are honored for their prestige and historical connotations while I desire to capture extremely new alternative art.

3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to the understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
Low Down on Lowbrow Art:
I enjoyed hearing about art deemed important from many different alternative people. Art defies simply the rich and establishments determining the worth of a visual work. Lowbrow galleries let the alternative art scenes to grow and be seen. However, now the internet has allowed many alternative art makers to gain more attention and I wish there was a film which addressed this contemporary phenomenon. The video touched on the lowbrow scene and awareness through the internet but the video itself is over ten years old and is capable of capturing the phenomenon to the capacity it has reached today.
An Acquiring Mind:

I found this film to be quite drab but contained a lot of insight into the hierarchy of selecting historical art and the proper restoration and authentication required in its showing.
