More Human Than Human

More Human Than Human Video Review

1. What are the most interesting discoveries you made watching this video?

  • Images of the human body dominate visual culture and fine arts.
  • Humans refer to themselves for reliability and comfort because of the familiarity
  • Human depictions, however, are often exaggerated and body types are often unattainable

2. What do you think about Vilayanur S. Ramachandran theory with the chicks?
The concept behind the seagull study was that the straw with more stripes would appear more appealing to the birds. However, there are major discrepancies between the minds of birds and humans and in fact, correlation does not equate to causation.  I do not think that the seagull study is enough evidence to justify the theory that people are more attracted to attainable and exaggerated forms of tge human body.

3. Do you see any connection between the art/subjects  in this video (Venus of Willendorf, the Herring gull chicks, Egyptian images of the human body, Kritian Boy) and the way the human body is portrayed today?
The Venus of Wilendorf exaggerates the human form for possibly a symbol of health, abundance, and fertility. The Egyptians depicted the human form to portray narratives and capture humans using a uniform method to quicken the process. The Greeks portrayed the finest human specimen to often represent superhuman deities or to enhance and portray the power of authority figures.
Today the human form is often portrayed unrealistically in advertisements and media. However, body image issues due to the media and advertising are commonly being recognized and combatted through various self-love and untouched ad campaigns. As we have visited prior, Photoshop in advertising and image manipulation allows for easy adjustments to body proportions which can distort viewers own body image. I believe the human body is always going to be a major image and symbol for humans to envision and represent themselves and absolutely has unrealistic standards at times in our age.
